Are you a good christian? (Marco 9 Aug 06)

Couple of passages from the beginning of the Bible:

Exodus 21

1 "These are the laws you are to set before them: 2 "If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything. ... 7 "If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as menservants do. 8 If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her.

Leviticus 25

44 " 'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Exodus 35

1 Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them, "These are the things the LORD has commanded you to do: 2 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.

Leviticus 21

9 " 'If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire.  10 " 'The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not let his hair become unkempt or tear his clothes. ... 13 " 'The woman he marries must be a virgin. 14 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people... 16 The LORD said to Moses, 17 "Say to Aaron: 'For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, 20 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God.

Leviticus 11

9 " 'Of all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams, you may eat any that have fins and scales. 10 But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales—whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water—you are to detest. 11 And since you are to detest them, you must not eat their meat and you must detest their carcasses. 12 Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be detestable to you.

Excessive reactions (Marco, 20 July 06)

there we go again. Hezbollah, probably inspired by Iran who wants to distract the attention from its nuclear program, restarted hostilities, kidnapping Israeli soldiers and rocketing several cities in Israel. Several civilians were killed.

The reaction has obviously been immediate, with the result of more than 250 victims among the civilians in Lebanon, and the destruction or blockage of its most important infrastructures.

I read on some newspapers that Europe is wrong in declaring excessive the reaction of Olmert. A population has the right to defend itself if attacked. I definitely agree on the last point.

But then I wonder: if you are convinced that the right to defend yourself includes the right to kill unarmed people, don't you rehabilitate the Palestinian terrorists as freedom fighters?

It is surely true that the Israeli army aims at Hezbollah, while the bombs and rockets from the other side are mostly aimed at civilians. But if you count the number of civilian victims (casualties?) you might think the contrary. I don't know the exact figures, but during WW2 the Nazis used to kill 10 Italians for every German who had been killed by the "partigiani"; the ratio doesn't look much different.

If Israeli people have the right to a normal and safe life, why is this right denied to the Palestinians? Although Gaza strip is officially free, most of the Palestinians live in much more humiliating conditions than what the poverty already provides.

All that gives me three thoughts:

1- The recent strikes against Lebanon have for sure reduced the material strength of Hezbollah. However the number of people who  now hate Israel and want it off the map is definitely increased, at least in Lebanon. Can we kill the whole Lebanon?

2 - There can never be peace in Middle East as long as the Palestinians are a people without a country. And then maybe...

3 - To get peace you need a treaty. To make a treaty you have to treat. In order to treat you need to accept and respect your counterpart. The policies of both sides are instead reducing to zero the number of people who have this mentality. It is a hate rush, also evident from the results of political elections. Olmert, I ask you like a friend, could you please let us send in some of our nice ONU, NATO, USA, EPO, or whatever of these troops who are normally so keen on bringing peace and democracy around the world?
